Membership Introduction

MEMBERSHIP OF THE SOCIETY SHALL BE OF 4 TYPES
    • Individual membership
    • Corporate membership
    • Honorary membership
    • Patron

ELIGIBILITY TO MEMBERSHIP

  • Any person over the age of eighteen years and corporate entities shall be eligible for membership of the   society and shall, subject to the approval of the Board become a member on payment of a entry fee that shall be determined by the Board.
  • Individual and Corporate Members of the Society shall pay an annual subscription, the amount and conditions of which shall be established by the Board and such subscription shall either be paid monthly, quarterly, half annually or annually.
  • A Corporate Member shall have the right of attendance at congresses and other meetings of the Society of one representative.

Honorary Members shall be exempted from paying entrance fees.

Apart from having Honorary Members, the society shall also have a Patron being a person who has served the medical, commercial or private sector, legal, architectural, accounts, finance and other professional bodies with distinctions for which s/he is given recognition. The Patron as with the Honorary Members shall not be required to be a member of the Society and shall therefore not be liable to pay membership dues.

ADMISSIONS

INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP

Admission of natural persons as members of the Society shall be by way of application as set in Rule 5.1.2 hereunder, and subject to the provision of Rule 7 (a) – (c). The criteria to be used in determining the eligibility of an applicant for membership shall be the following:

  • Academic and/or scientific qualifications and a clear demonstration of a sustained interest in the field of blood transfusion and related disciplines and/or
  • Active and practical work in the field of blood transfusion and related disciplines for a period of not less than three years and/or
  • Eminent stature in the field of blood transfusion and related services
  • Any regular blood donor and any individual interested in safe blood transfusion practices.

CANDIDATURE, APPLICATION AND ADMISSION OF INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS

  • Natural persons desiring to be admitted as Members of the Society shall complete in all respects the application form for this purpose, available on request from the Society
  • It is a requirement for admission to the Society for an individual Member, that the applicant submits the name of at least one present member of the Society who is prepared to endorse the applicant’s candidature. Failure to comply with this requirement shall immediately disqualify the applicant.
  • All applicants for Individual Membership received in terms of this Rule shall be considered by the current Board of the Society. Decisions made by this Board in relation to the application received shall be by way of a majority vote, should there be a deadlock on whether to admit the applicant as a member.

 CORPORATE MEMBERS

  • Admission of an Organisation, Society, Association or Service as members of the Society shall be by way of application as set in Rule 5.2.1  (b)  hereunder, and subject to the provisions of Rule 7 (a) – (c ) The criteria to be based in determining the eligibility of an applicant for Membership shall be the following:
    • An active interest in the objective of the Society and/or
    • Eminent stature, nationally or internationally in the field of blood transfusion and related disciplines for a period of not less than three years
  • Any Organisation, Society, Association or Service admitted as a Corporate Member of the Society shall be represented by one official representative who shall be entitled to attend General Meetings and exercise voting rights in terms hereof on behalf of the said Organisation, Society, Association or Service.

CANDIDATURE, APPLICATION AND ADMISSION OF CORPORATE MEMBERS

  • Any Organisation, Society, Association or Service desiring to be admitted as members of the Society shall complete in all respect the application form for this purpose,  available on request from the Society
  • All applications from any Organisation, Society, Association or Service Membership received in terms of Rule 5.2.2(a) shall be considered by the current Board of the Society. Decisions made by the Board in relation to an application received shall be made by way of a majority vote.

SUPPORT ORGANISATIONS

  • Non-profit organisations and/or commercial companies, shall qualify as supporting organisations of the Society by virtue of providing annual grants, above an agreed minimum level to be determined by the Board.

Save for:-

  • Preference being given to them at commercial exhibitions held at Congresses, workshops, seminars etc organised by the society; and
  • An acknowledgement of their support by publication of their names in appropriate publications – no further rights and/or privileges shall accrue to such organisations.
  • Support organisations will accordingly have no voting or nominating rights.

HONORARY MEMBERSHIP

  • In recognition of natural persons who have rendered distinguished services to:
  • The Society and/or
  • The general field of blood transfusion and related disciplines – such persons may be elected as Honorary Members as set out hereunder.
  • Any Individual Member may recommend to the Board for Honorary Membership and such recommendation shall be made at least 90 days before an Annual General Meeting.
  • The Board shall, by majority vote, decide on such a nomination, and if approved, the name of the nominees so approved shall be put before the Annual General Meeting for ratification by majority vote.
  • Newly elected Honorary Member shall, in addition to any rights in terms of the Constitution, be presented by the Chairperson with an appropriate certificate reflecting his/her status
  • Such presentation shall, where possible, be made at a suitable time during a General Meeting.

 RIGHTS OF MEMBERS

Eligibility to vote:

All members of the Society, be they Individual Members, Corporate Members or Honorary Members, shall have the right to vote by ballot or otherwise at the business meeting of the Society.

Right to hold office

Only Individual and Corporate members shall have the right to hold office in the Society.

Eligibility to submit or sponsor communications

All members, be they Individual Members, Honorary Members or representatives of any Corporate Member, shall be eligible to present scientific papers at the congresses by the Society, or to sponsor communications at such congresses by non-members.

Right to receive copy of this constitution

Every Member of the Society shall be furnished with a copy of this Constitution, as soon as reasonably possible after admission of the member to the Society.

Right to nominate for vacancies in the Board

Every Member, be they Individual Members, Honorary Members or representatives of any Corporate Member, shall have the right to nominate persons for vacancies in the Board

TERMINATION OF MEMBERSHIP

An Individual Membership or a Corporate Member shall cease to be a Member of the Society upon occurrence of any of the following:

  • Any member desiring to resign from the Society may submit his resignation to the Secretary, which shall take effect from the date of receipt by the Secretary of such notice.
  • Any member who falls into arrears with his subscription for more than six months shall automatically cease to be a member of the Society and his name shall be struck off the register of members. The Board may, however, at its discretion reinstate such a member on payment of the total amount of subscription outstanding.
  • Any member may be expelled from membership if the Board so recommends and if a General Meeting of the Society shall resolve by a two-thirds majority of the members present that such a member shall be expelled on the grounds that his conduct has adversely affected the reputation and dignity of the Society or that he has contravened any provisions of the constitution of the Society. The Board shall have the power to suspend a member from his membership until the next General Meeting of the Society following such suspension but not withstanding such suspension a member whose expulsion is proposed shall have the right to address the General Meeting at which his expulsion is to be considered.
  • Any member who resigns or is removed from membership shall not be entitled to a refund of his subscription or any part thereof or any moneys contributed by him at any time.
  • By a decision of the Board of the Society, provided that the Member concerned shall have the right to a hearing, as envisaged by the Laws of Natural Justice.  All such decisions by the Board shall be recorded by a person duly assigned to this task, and the Board shall report to a General Meeting in regard to such exclusions.
  • In the case of a natural Member, by death and in case of corporate members dissolution.
